Martin Wattenberg says:
I wanted to see the patterns of political contributions in my hometown. Winchester is a small suburb of Boston, and politically unusual in several respects. It's probably far more liberal than the US as a whole, but it's also right next to Belmont, which is Mitt Romney's hometown. There are also many lawyers living here, and you can see that the single largest block of donations in this matrix is lawyers giving to Edwards.

I think this might be a slightly better color choice, since in this one the blue has about the same saturation and brightness as the red.

Matt McKeon says:
Also, strangely enough, it looks as some of the largest average contributions went to Edwards ... from unemployed people? Is "unemployed" actually a secret word for "independently wealthy"?

Martin Wattenberg says:
"Not employed" certainly could mean independently wealthy. Also it could describe someone who doesn't work but their spouse does, or for that matter someone who's retired. The data relies on self-report, so you can't necessarily assume that a retiree will say "retired" for instance.
