Keep in mind these data reflect merely initial report date of first case for each state, not onset dates. There are delays of potentially several weeks between a person feeling unwell —> seeking medical care —> clinical culture —> hospital lab —> state public health lab —> Salmonella isolate “fingerprinted” (PFGE) and serotyped at state public health lab. There may be delays in the process that vary substantially between different places. That said, it is interesting that so many states in East were later than Midwest and Southwest in finding cases. Perhaps that is saying something about movement of tomatoes, maybe not.
