I love how the “tag cloud” can be used to display numerical data, like population. I’m working on a similar visualization that uses color to provide a second data dimension.

Nice, would be interesting to see the variations, eg population breakdown by age if possible….new to the site, would try and do something similar for car manufacturers over time, and then possibly the different model types, eg bm2, 3, 5, 7……etc

Oh, variations over time. I like that! Have you seen gapminder.org? It would be awesome for this data cloud visualization to have a slider bar at the bottom so that you could scroll through time and watch how time affects the population of various countries.

Good now connect this with the CIA factbook data and then you’ve got a beauty… just don’t depend of the CIA when it comes to geography… Joke

Why not alter the colour from red to blue according to the gender breakdown of the population? 80+ female = deep red, 80+ male = deep blue, 50:50 = purple. Then you’ve got a second layer of information as well.

It would be good to display the numeric population values with commas so that it is easier to read/interpret at a glance, without having to mentally place them in your head.
