Strange that Uganda’s consumption is so high given the relatively low consumption of its neighbours

I’m sure Ireland would have made it to the top if they’d started counting 10 year olds up rather than 15 year olds. :)

Europeans drink more as a group.

Jacket says:

That does seem strange maybe its a blip in the data, quick google turned up the following fact:

Among the Bagonda people of Uganda, the several widows of a recently deceased king have the distinctive honor of drinking the beer in which his entrails have been cleaned.

I’m not sure if that would encourage alcohol consumption.

Jacket says:

Do you reckon people drink less near the equator due to economic reasons or climate reasons? I’ve heard that the alcohol content of beer in the south of the USA is lower than in the north.

Fernanda B. Viegas says:

The swath of “white” countries refers to the Muslim world. Muslims don’t drink alcohol for religious reasons.

So it’s interesting to see how the map below, of the Muslim population around the world, is almost a reverse image of the alcohol map above:

Jacket says:

Ah excellent point, should have thought of that. But that still doesn’t explain central and “northern” south America having a lower consumption.

For the story on Ugandese alcohol consumption, check here: http://www.nationmedia.com/eastafrican/15082005/Magazine/Magazine150820052.htm
Seems like some national epidemic..

Bernie.Hogan says:

Hey all, I’m not familiar with this dataset – what’s the time scale – Alcohol consumption per capita per … month? year?

On the original dataset, it says pure alcohol, which makes up only a small percentage of the drink that’s consumed. So 7.8 litres for Canada would seem like a year.

Bernie.Hogan says:

Fernanda,
To the percentage of muslims vs. the chart above. That’s really interesting. Is there a way here to mash up the datasets such that one can:
1. standardize the distribution for both
2. Subtract one from the other
And show visually [sort of] the correlation?
[by calling the rows of the datasets rather than merely cutting and pasting outside the program]

colm says:

Bernie – it’s alcohol consumption per year, I’ve updated the dataset to reflect this.

Hungary is European Champion! We outperform Russia, Finland and all Baltic countries!
In the 80’s we also lead world wide suicide statistics. In those years, alcohol consumption was even higher, around 15 litres per year.

Jacket,
If I had to guess I would say the reason that South America has a low consumption rate has something to do with Catholicism? Who knows though.

colm says:

Anonymous – given Ireland’s alcohol consumption level I’m not convinced that Catholicism reduces alcohol consumption.

Some more interesting info about Ugandan drinking here :http://allafrica.com/stories/200711301128.html. Apparently, in 2005, the WHO classified Uganda as the leading consumer of alcohol in the world!
